Madison’s twin stepchildren, Bessie and Roland, have a very unusual condition: they spontaneously burst into flames when upset. Along the way, she discovers friendship, family, and acceptance in the most unusual of circumstances.
Review:
This is one of those books that makes you stop and say, “Wait… children who catch on fire?” Yes, really. And yes, you’ll want to read it.
Once you adjust to the surreal premise, Nothing to See Here is surprisingly grounded, funny, and heartfelt. Kevin Wilson perfectly balances absurdity with warmth, and Lillian’s dry humor had me laughing out loud more times than I can count. Her bond with Bessie and Roland is unexpectedly touching, and their fiery condition works beautifully as a metaphor for uncontrollable emotions—making their struggles relatable even in such a fantastical setup.
My only quibbles are minor: the pacing slows a bit in spots, and some side characters don’t get the same depth as Lillian and the twins. But honestly, those are small blips in an otherwise delightful read.
✨ If you want a quirky, laugh-out-loud story that also tugs at your heart, Nothing to See Here is a fantastic pick. Wilson’s witty writing and the story’s charm will leave you warm—and maybe a little singed!
